Hello, my computers in my home are not connecting to the Internet. Charter Communication provides Internet to my home. I contacted their support and conducted a tracert that resulted in the Destination Net Unreachable error message. The Charter Communication technician on the phone asked me whether I had a firewall on my computer and asked me to remove it before continuing the steps.

I am not sure if the computer firewall is the reason for the destination net unreachable error. Should I uninstall the firewall or any other methods?

I had the same problem, and the problem was my connection style. I hooked the Ethernet cable from the computer to the Internet port of the router. Conencted the Etehrnet cable from modem to the LAN port of the router. It resulted a destination net unreachable error.

The real connection according to the DSL broadband company is:

Computer connects to the router's LAN port. Modem connects to the router's Internet port.

Destination Net Unreachable error tells the ping packets from your computer failed to find a route to the remote network.

It can happen due to multiple reasons.
  1. Network configuration error

Due to the wrong network configuration, the ping packets fail to find a valid path to the destination network.
  2. Wrong Windows hosts file entries

Remove any entries on the Windows hosts file on your PC.

Have you verified the default gateway IP address? Is it the correct IP?

Alex George beautifully explained the technical reason for getting a Destination Net Unreachable message while you ping Google from your computer. I will share a permanent solution to this problem.

Step 1: Power cycle the Network
Power off the modem, router, and computer for five minutes. Disconnect the cables between them and reconnect. Power on the modem first and wait till the Internet light is steady.

Power on the router and wait till the Internet light is steady. Now, switch on the computer.

Step 2:
If you still see the ping reply as Destination Net Unreachable, delete Windows Local Host File entries.

Visit this location and open the 'hosts' file in the notepad. Delete all entries and save the file. Go to the Command Prompt and type ping google.com. Check if you still get a destination net unreachable error as the ping reply.

Step 3: Turn Off Firewall

Turn Off all security firewall systems on your computer and check for the issue.

Complete this process and let me know the result.
